- What appeals most to you about our industry?
- What do know about the job and training?
- How certain are you that this career is what you want?
- Roofing – Do you like working outside and can you handle heights?
Plumbing, Gasfitting, Drainlaying or Roofing Experience
- Do you have any previous experience in the industry?
- Have you undergone work experience with a PGD or R employer? If yes, what did you learn.
- Have you completed a pre-trade course? If yes, where and did you complete it.
Motivation
- Outside of your career goals, what things do you want to achieve or obtain in the next 10 years? (eg car, boat, travel etc)
- What motivates you? Where do you want to be in four years time?
Personal Qualities
- What are your personal qualities that would impress an employer?
- If I was to ask someone that knows you well, what personal qualities would they say you have?
- Convince me why a prospective employer should take you on as a trainee.
Practical Skills
- What tools are you familiar with using?
- In what ways do you consider you are a practical person?
- Do you like fixing things? Give an example.
- What work do you do around home? Give examples.
- Learning Ability
- What do you do when you need to learn something?
- What do you think of the term – problem solving? Are you a problem solver?
- Tell me about a time when you had a difficult problem to solve. How did you go about it? What was the outcome?
School & Tertiary Qualifications
- What secondary school did you attend?
- What passes did you obtain in NCEA (or School Certificate) and in which subjects?
- If you are at school when do you plan to leave?
- Have you any other tertiary qualifications?
Previous Work Experience
- What are you doing now? What is your other work experience?
- What did you actually do in the job?
- Why did you leave the previous position(s)?
Other Apprenticeships
- Are you or have you been in any other apprenticeship?
Family
- Are any family members in trade careers?
- Are any other associates or family friends in trade careers?
- Are your parents, spouse and/or partner supportive of your career choice?
Driving
- Do you have a clean drivers licence? Is it restricted? Do you own a vehicle?
Health
- Are you physically fit and strong? Do you have any disabilities or medical problems?

- Have you got an up-to-date CV? Have you listed your referees?

- Do you have a preferred location or will you work any where?
